Glacier walk
Glacier Walks in Norway
Walk on ancient ice shaped by time
Glacier walking in Norway offers a rare chance to set foot on ice that’s thousands of years old. With 20 glaciers across the country—including Jostedalsbreen, the largest on mainland Europe — these vast, blue-tinged landscapes are both powerful and peaceful.
Guided adventures only
For safety and preservation, glacier walks are only available as guided tours — and for good reason. The terrain can change quickly, and ice blocks may break without warning. With a certified glacier guide, you’ll receive all necessary gear and instruction, allowing you to explore safely and confidently.
Where to go
Popular glacier walk destinations include:
- Nigardsbreen and Bøyabreen, both arms of Jostedalsbreen
- Folgefonna, known for its panoramic views and summer snow
- Svartisen, located near the Arctic Circle
Each offers different levels of difficulty, from beginner-friendly routes to more technical climbs for the adventurous.
What to expect
Equipped with crampons, rope, and an ice axe (all provided), you'll hike across the glacier’s icy surface, weaving through crevasses and past stunning formations of blue ice. It's a physically active, awe-inspiring experience — ideal for those who want to see nature up close and raw.
An experience like no other
More than just a hike, a glacier walk is a lesson in geology, climate, and respect for nature’s forces. It’s one of the most dramatic — and humbling—ways to explore the Norwegian wilderness.
