Spectacular Fjords
Spectacular Fjords in Norway
Norway’s signature wonder
The word fjord comes from Norwegian — and for good reason. These long, narrow inlets carved by ancient glaciers are among the world’s most dramatic natural landscapes. From sheer cliffs plunging into deep blue waters to lush valleys that stretch peacefully inland, each fjord has its own personality — and its own story.
Geirangerfjord: UNESCO wonder
Surrounded by snowcapped peaks and waterfalls like The Seven Sisters and The Bridal Veil, Geirangerfjord is a true natural spectacle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Norway’s most visited fjords, and for good reason — whether you see it by ferry, sightseeing boat, or hiking trail, its beauty is unforgettable.
Sognefjord: The king of fjords
At 204 km long and over 1,300 meters deep, Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway — and the second longest in the world. It stretches from the coast all the way to Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen national parks. Along the way, the narrower Nærøyfjord — also UNESCO-listed—offers a stunning side trip.
Hardangerfjord: Blossoms and glaciers
Close to Bergen lies the Hardangerfjord, famous for its springtime fruit blossoms, the powerful Vøringsfossen waterfall, and Folgefonna Glacier. The fjord winds through charming villages and dramatic scenery, with great hiking and scenic drives along its shores. It’s also a hub for sustainable aquaculture.
Lysefjord: Adventure meets serenity
Just outside Stavanger, the Lysefjord is a mecca for adventure seekers. Home to iconic hikes like Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjerag, this 42 km fjord offers towering granite walls, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic views — best explored by boat, kayak, or from the top of a mountain.
